The markets of Turin represent the beating heart of the gastronomical scene of the city. Every city quarter has its market, and each of these markets specializes in a commodity. The Turinese market par excellence, however, would of course be Porta Palazzo. Every morning a huge group of stands invades piazza della Repubblica, behind the city center. The market of Porta Palazzo dates all the way back to 1825 (before which the central market was held in piazza Palazzo di Città). Today Porta Palazzo offers a wonderful mix of Turinese tradition, Italian and non immigration, and the future. And on Saturday mornings and on the second Sunday of each month, the famous Balon takes over the piazza. The Balon is of course the great and much-loved flea market of Turin. Check out the metal and glass covered pavilion of 1916 and the sign which honors Francesco Cirio (the man behind the agriculture-alimentary company) at the corner of corso Giulio Cesare. |
