Beppe Fenoglio

Beppe Fenoglio was born in Alba in 1922. He enrolled at the University of Turin but never completed his studies. He became an officer in the army and was transferred to Rome. In 1943, however, he returned to Alba and joined the partisans. When the war was over, he began working for a wine producer, but his real vocation was that of writing. In 1952 Einaudi published his “I ventitrè giorni della città di Alba” (The Twenty-Three Days of the City of Alba) and in 1954 “La malora” (Ruin). He died in 1963 of a lung tumor. Several works by Fenoglio were published posthumously including “Il partigiano Johnny” (Johnny the Partisan) and “La paga del sabato” (Saturday’s Wages).
