Born in Carrù (in the province of Cuneo) in 1874, Luigi Einaudi bridged the two centuries as one of the great leaders of the newly unified Italy. Perhaps best known for his contribution to Italian politics (Einaudi was made the first prime minister of the Republic in 1948), this statesman was also an economist and professor at the University of Turin (and a young professor at that – he was just 21 when he began teaching at the Politecnico). Einaudi was awarded a degree “honoris causa” at Oxford, and although his career in politics often kept him in Rome, he very much loved Piedmont and returned as often as possible especially for big events such as the Salone dell’Automobile (the Car Show). Father to Giulio Einaudi, Luigi Einaudi died in Rome in 1961. |
