Vincenzo Gioberti

Born in Turin in 1801, Vincenzo Gioberti obtained a university degree in theology and was ordained a priest two years later. He participated in the moderate Liberal movement, and he 1833 he contributed to Mazzini’s newspaper “La Giovine Italia”. Arrested that same year, he was sent into exile and went first to Paris and then to Brussels. He returned to Italy after 15 years abroad, “allietato solo dalle gioie dello spirito e della fede nella resurrezione d’Italia”, “cheered only by his joy of spirit and faith for the resurrection of Italy”. In 1843 he published his most famous work: “Del primato morale e civile degli italiani” (The Moral and Civil Preeminence of the Italians). He died in Paris in 1852.
