In 1810 the French government began constructing il ponte di piazza Vittorio (the bridge of piazza Vittorio), which was at the time called the “bridge of stone”. This is the most central bridge of the city – it crosses the Po to connect piazza Vittorio with the chiesa della Gran Madre di Dio (church). Supposedly Napoleon himself commissioned the bridge, though the project was then put in the hands of Claude-Joseph La Ramče Pertinchamp. |
